Low Post One Dribble Counter Moves
When making a low post drop step to the middle or front turn and crossover to the middle and your defender anticipates your move to shoot a hook shot and jumps in your path, you can counter using one of the following one dribble options:
1. Fake Hook and One Dribble Drive to Opposite Side for Hook
Look for an opening to the opposite side of the basket. Be alert for help side defenders. If you see an opening, fake a hook shot, then create space away from your the defender with a one dribble drive to the opposite side of the basket. Keep your weight on your pivot foot to avoid dragging it. Make certain to push the dribble out away from your defender. Pick the ball up off the dribble with your shooting hand under the ball and your other hand slightly behind the ball for protection. Shoot a hook shot. Aim the ball high above the top near corner of the box on the backboard. Land in balance, ready to rebound a possible miss with two hands, and use a power move to score.
2. Fake Hook and Counter with One Dribble Spin Back Power Move
Fake a hook shot and use a counter spin back power move. Dribble the ball between your knees as you reverse pivot (spin back) on the same foot as your crossover step. Dribbling the ball between your knees protects the ball from a help defender trying to flick it away. Keep your weight on your pivot foot to avoid dragging it. Try to get your shoulders parallel to the back¬board and your defender on your back. Maintain a strong, balanced stance with your back straight and the ball protected in front of your forehead, away from your defender. Make a power move toward the basket, jumping off both feet. Shoot the ball with two hands, keeping your shoulders parallel to the board and without opening up on the shot. Aim the ball high above the box. Land in balance, ready to rebound a possible miss with two hands, and use a power move to score.
