jeremy lin 300By now the details of Jeremy Lin’s unexpected transformation from being an undrafted non-entity to being an instant legend are well known. Indeed, he capped his sudden emergence into  greatness with a 38-point explosion as the short-handed Knicks defeated the Lakers on Friday night – New York’s fourth consecutive win since injuries and desperation forced Mike D’Antoni to make Lin the team’s starting point guard. So what exactly does this Asian-American with a Harvard education do? And is there anything he can’t do?

Confidence is the Most Important Factor in Shooting

Believe in yourself. You want to have confidence in your ability to make the shot every time you shoot. Confident shooters control their thoughts, feelings, and shooting skill. Basketball is a mental as well as physical game. Developing the mental aspect is a key to enhancing shooting, as well as performance in all fundamentals.

By Andrew Pearson, NBA TV, March 31, 2006

With his abundance of college and professional coaching experience, as well as being the author of two books and various other basketball videos, there are few who can teach the most essential part of basketball – shooting – better than Dr. Hal Wissel. To try and impart some of his vast knowledge to us, the doctor made a house call to the NBA TV Greenroom to share some insights.

Wissel has coached many NBA players as an assistant coach in the NBA and at his shooting camps.

Do you want to become a champion? How bad do you want it? It is not uncommon to see those who have been born with great potential never come close to realizing that potential. Blessed with great natural ability, they have been content to make minor progress. They have known no restlessness or discontent and no burning inner desire to reach a dream. It has been said, there is nothing as common as unsuccessful people with potential.

If there is a secret to becoming a successful basketball player that secret is drilling on fundamentals. This is not to say that playing five on five is not important. You need both game competition, and individual work on your own. Often, a player with potential is lacking the effort in individual work. It is sad that some players never come to the realization that basketball is a fundamental game and that drilling on fundamentals is the key to success.

Familiarize yourself with the player you are coaching. Learn to listen more than you talk. A player wants to feel comfortable with you and have confidence in you before they work with you. At times you will coach a player that will feel that you think he cannot shoot. Always start with what the player is doing well.
