30 Second Workout Drill: Speed Dribble Step-Through Hook

30 Second Workout Drill: Speed Dribble Step-Through Hook
By Hal Wissel

When you anticipate a defender trying to block your jump hook you can counter by faking a jump hook, then making a step through to the middle with your outside foot and shooting a regular hook shot. This challenging drill combines the use of speed and reverse dribbles, one-two stops, jump shot fakes, and step-through hook shots. The drill consists of alternately driving from each elbow (the intersection of the foul line and lane line) making a one-two stop, faking a jump hook, then making a step-through to the middle and shooting a regular hook shot when dribbling right and dribbling left.
Start at the right elbow in a balanced stance with your left foot forward and your right foot back. Drive to the basket using a speed dribble with your outside (right) hand and make a one-two stop landing on your inside (left) foot first. Make an aggressive jump hook shot fake, then step-through to the middle with you outside (right) foot, and shoot a left hand hook shot. Catch the ball with two hands and speed dribble out to the left elbow, using your outside (right) hand. Place your inside (left) foot on the elbow and reverse dribble, pulling the ball back toward the basket with your outside (right) hand.

Record the number of step-through hook shots you make in 30 seconds. A good score is six step-through hook shots in 30 seconds. At the completion of the drill shoot two free throws.
